The Excel Center of Roanoke’s curriculum is thoughtfully designed to be more than just an academic framework—it is a dynamic learning space that fosters innovation and creativity. Serving adult learners, our educational model is grounded in the principles of the Virginia Standards of Learning, incorporating Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses that focus on equipping students with practical, job-specific skills and knowledge to prepare them for careers in various industries. The Excel Center will combine academic learning with hands-on training and are designed to meet the needs of today’s workforce. This hybrid approach to teaching and learning ensures a comprehensive development of students’ attitudes, skills, and personal capabilities through engaging, hands-on practices and rigorous academic skill development.

Flexible, Accelerated Learning

The Excel Center® Roanoke operates on a unique five-term academic year, with each term lasting eight weeks. This accelerated structure allows students to earn credits faster, stay engaged, and make steady progress toward their high school diploma. With flexible scheduling, personalized support, and career-focused coursework, our model is designed to help adult learners succeed on a timeline that works for them.

To graduate from The Excel Center with a High School diploma, students are required to complete a minimum of 22 credits across various core subjects and electives. These credits are strategically distributed to ensure that students gain comprehensive knowledge and skills across essential academic and practical disciplines.

English Language Arts

4 Credits

Includes American and World Literature, composition, and advanced writing skills.

Mathematics

3 Credits

Includes Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.

Science

3 Credits

Include Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry.

Humanities

3 Credits

Includes U.S./World History, Geography, and other social studies courses that provide a deep understanding of global and local contexts.

Elective Subject Credits

Career and Technical Education

8 Credits

Can be fulfilled by courses in leading industry-recognized certifications through Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, gaining valuable skills in high-demand fields.

Personal Finance

1 Credits

Promotes physical health, wellness, and teamwork through various sports and activities.

Electives

Individually Determined Students may choose from additional courses in core subjects or other areas such as Foundation and/or Immersion courses, or additional CTE courses. This flexibility allows students to tailor their education according to their interests and career aspirations.

The selection of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses will be strategically designed to foster a comprehensive, challenging, and enriching learning environment that prepares students for higher education and future careers. Our curriculum will be meticulously tailored to meet the diverse interests, academic needs, and evolving dynamics of the regional work force landscape.

Career and Technical Education courses at The Excel Center will cover a wide array of disciplines, allowing students to explore and develop diverse skills and interests beyond core subjects. These will include areas such as the Medical, Manufacturing, or Technology. Courses will offer students the flexibility to deepen their knowledge in preferred subjects, aiding in the development of specialized skills that can influence future academic and career choices. These courses will also promote self-discovery and personal growth will prepare students for specific college majors and careers, providing foundational knowledge and skills beneficial for university-level education.

Dual Enrollment Courses

Dual credit courses at The Excel Center will provide students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school, which will enhance their attractiveness to universities during the admissions process. This will demonstrate that students are capable of handling challenging coursework. Providing a variety of dual credit courses will allow students to pursue academic excellence in areas that specifically interest them, contributing to a well-rounded and comprehensive education.
